Node 004 — Shade
Tree: Sapling · Parent: 003b — One Leaf for Yes · Trunk: yes · Status: hot
This file is a T0 leaf. Steward-authored trunk continuation under taste file v0.2 (see ../../edl.md).
Format: 9:16 vertical · 60–90s · VO + dialogue
State change (R1)
The place gets its name — chosen by the tree itself through the protocol — and its second citizen: the farmer arrives following the mended water, and the two humans of this story meet for the first time. A settlement now exists that outsiders can refer to; which, per the hook, means bureaucracy can too.
Hook (R5)
Naming the place made it legible. The farmer's parting line — the assessor walks the valley after every harvest, and now there's something on the map to assess. The town is one day old and already has a tax problem. (The audience knows the scavenger's entire criminal history is one apple.)
Script
RECAP BEAT — 0:00–0:08
The raised fig. The held breath from 003b.
SCAVENGER: I hereby name this place… uh.
He lowers the fig.
SCAVENGER: …I had something prepared.
THE NAMING — 0:08–0:40
He paces the tiny territory — lean-to, cairn-sized clearing, tree — auditioning names at the sapling like a founder pitching investors:
SCAVENGER: Newhaven! (no leaf) Greenrest? (nothing) Fig… holm? (aggressively nothing)
SCAVENGER (wounded): Everything cannot be a no. You are a plant. Where did you get opinions?
VO: Every one of those is the name of a place that already exists somewhere, waiting to disappoint someone. Name the thing after what it does, like every good system since the dawn of—
The scavenger flops down against the trunk, defeated, out of the midday sun.
SCAVENGER (muttering): …Whatever. It's just shade.
Both leaves tilt at once.
The scavenger goes very still. Looks up.
SCAVENGER: Shade? That's not a name, that's a — (the leaves tilt again, emphatic)* — okay! Okay. Shade.
He stands, raises the fig with far less ceremony and far more meaning:
SCAVENGER: Welcome to Shade. Population: one. Amenities: (gestures at everything) shade.
VO: Named after the first thing I ever gave anyone. Approved unanimously by the housing committee, which is me. …I'd have accepted
prod-east-1, but this is better.
THE SECOND CITIZEN — 0:40–1:08
A sound — boots. The scavenger dives behind the trunk (still hiding one-sixth of him). But it isn't the patrol.
It's the FARMER, walking the damp line upstream, exactly the way he traced it in the sibling world the audience may have seen — following the water that shouldn't exist to the tree it leads to. He stops at the clearing's edge: the lean-to, the cairn, the goblin visibly failing to hide.
A long mutual stare. The audience braces.
FARMER: …You the one who's been keeping the weeds off this stretch? SCAVENGER (from behind the tree): Depends who's asking. FARMER: Man whose field started drinking again.
He sets down what he's carrying — a clay jug and half a loaf — at the base of the trunk, next to the cairn stones. Not charity. Tribute. Then, gruff, to the tree, refusing eye contact with anyone:
FARMER: Tell no one. SCAVENGER (emerging, delighted): He talks to it too! Oh, this is the best day of my—
Above them, just for a single frame at the horizon-touch of sunset, the world flickers — a wireframe pulse the two of them don't notice and the audience does. Over the clearing, a brand-new label renders and folds away:
SHADE · settlement(?) · pop. 2
VO (quiet): The system just… registered us. We're on the map.
THE HOOK — 1:08–1:25
The farmer shoulders his empty sack to leave, then stops. Turns back. The kind of pause that ruins evenings.
FARMER: You should know. After harvest, the assessor walks the valley. Counts everything with a name.
Beat. He looks at the lean-to. The cairn. The goblin holding a fig like a scepter.
FARMER: …Yesterday there was nothing here to count.
He walks off into the dusk. The scavenger looks at the tree. The tree's leaves are very still.
SCAVENGER (small voice): …Can you un-name a town?
SMASH TO BLACK.
SHADE · pop. 2 · TAXABLE: pending
Lineage notes
Parent: 003b (trunk). Grafts absorbed: the mended water and the
farmer's cairn arrive from the 002a/003a line (the branch stays alive; its
events are now trunk-visible canon); the sunset wireframe from the 002c/003c
line registers the settlement (settlement(?) — the system's uncertainty
glyph now hangs over the town as well as the tree). Anticipated: the
assessor is the patrol's paperwork made ambulatory — Shade's first
existential threat is a form.
Taste-rule notes
- R1: the place is named, registered, and populated by two — three irreversible changes, each with a cost attached.
- R2: the looming antagonist is an assessor — a man who counts things. Nobody in this story will ever be evil; they will all be thorough.
- R3: the naming resolves by deflation (grand ceremony → "it's just shade" → unanimous approval by the housing committee, which is me).
- R5: the hook is a real state change — legibility. Being on the map is the price of being a place.
